In October 2024, Game Freak was hit with a massive data breach that caused nearly 1 terabyte of internal data from the company’s servers to be leaked online. The data contained the personal information and contact details of over 2,000 employees who worked at Game Freak, and it also included confidential files that were used in the production of various Pokemon projects, seemingly including Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Source code, concept art, and even design documents for games that were released within the last 25 years were all included in the leaked materials. This data breach, which later became known as the Teraleak, was devastating for the hard-working developers at Game Freak, but it did give fans some insight into the company’s future plans for Pokemon Legends: Z-A and more.
Among the leaked details included in the Teraleak were some new Mega Evolution designs that Game Freak intended to use in future projects. One Pokemon that was apparently getting a new Mega Evolution was, surprisingly, Zeraora. Since Game Freak had already confirmed that the Mega Evolution mechanic would make a return in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, a lot of fans expected the game to feature Mega Zeraora in some capacity. However, with Pokemon Legends: Z-A now a month away from its release, Game Freak has yet to officially announce any such Pokemon for the game. Despite this, fans shouldn’t give up hope, because there’s a chance that the company will add Mega Zeraora at a later date.
If Mega Zeraora does actually become a thing, then Zeraora will be one of very few Mythical Pokemon to have a Mega Evolution form of its own.
Game Freak Could Add Mega Zeraora to Pokemon Legends: Z-A in a Future Expansion
Pokemon Legends: Z-A is Getting a Paid DLC Called Mega Dimension Next Year
Like most recent installments in the core Pokemon series, Pokemon Legends: Z-A is getting a major paid expansion shortly after its launch. This DLC, titled Mega Dimension, was actually revealed by Game Freak during the last Nintendo Direct. According to Game Freak, Mega Dimension will expand upon the story of Pokemon Legends: Z-A by adding several hours of single-player content. The DLC, which revolves around Team MZ and the mythical Pokemon Hoopa, will also feature two new Mega Evolutions for Raichu: Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y.
The Mega Dimension Reveal Trailer Contains a Potential Tease for New Mega Evolutions
Although Game Freak has already provided a vague outline of what to expect from Mega Dimension, it seems that the DLC may contain more content than the company is letting on. In Mega Dimension’s reveal trailer, viewers can see several Mega Stones briefly flying across the screen. Two of these Mega Stones, Raichunite X and Raichunite Y, are meant to give Raichu the ability to evolve into Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y, respectively. The other 14 Mega Stones shown in the trailer, however, seem to be completely new, as they don’t resemble any existing ones. This, therefore, implies that the DLC will contain a total of 16 new Mega Evolutions that won’t be present in the base game.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A May Get a Second Big Expansion in the Future
While it’s possible that Mega Zeraora could be one of the new Pokemon in the Mega Dimension expansion, it may also be introduced to players in another DLC. A leaker on Twitter named Coreygaming05 claimed earlier this month that Pokemon Legends: Z-A would receive not one, but two DLCs in the future. Although there’s a chance that the second DLC that Corey is referring to will be smaller in scope than Mega Dimension, it wouldn’t be surprising if Game Freak actually released another major paid expansion for Pokemon Legends: Z-A later on.
Game Freak Will Likely Add Several Mega Evolutions to Pokemon Legends: Z-A After Its Launch
Aside from Pokemon Legends: Arceus, the recent core series Pokemon games have all received two paid expansions each in the months since their releases. Pokemon Sword and Shield got the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra expansions, while Pokemon Scarlet and Violet received the two-part Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLCs. If Pokemon Legends: Z-A follows this pattern, then Game Freak may very well add more Mega Evolutions, including Mega Zeraora, to the game sometime after its launch.
